A Thousand splendid suns is a 2007 novel that was written by Afghan-American author named Khaled Hosseini. It was his second bestselling novel after The Kite Runner. This novel is regards the as the “mother-daughter story” in contrast to The Kite Runner which he considered as father son story. The writer continues the themes used in his previous work such as familial aspects, but he primarily focuses on female characters and their roles in Afghan Society. A thousand splendid suns was released on May 22, 2007 and received favorable prepublication reviews from Kirkus Reviews, publishers weekly and booklist becoming a number one New York Times bestseller for fifteen weeks following its release. During its first week on the market, it sold over one million copies. The first adaptation of the book premiered on February 1, 2017 at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, California. The title of the book comes from a line in the Josephine Davis translation of the poem Kabul, by the 17th century Iranian poet Saib Tabrizi. The writer of the book disclosed that in some ways A thousand splendid suns was more difficult to write than his first novel. He also found his second novel to be more ambitious than the first due to its larger number of characters, its dual focus on Mariam and Laila and its covering of a multi generational period of nearly forty five years. Similar to the first novel, the manuscript had to be extensively revised. Hosseini divulged that he ultimately wrote the book five times before it was complete. The novel is anticipated release was first announced in October 2006, when it was described as a story about family, friendship, faith, and the salvation to be found in love.

Khaled Hosseini was born on 4th March, 1965. He is an Afghan born American novelist and physician. After graduating from college, he worked as a doctor in California an occupation that he likened to an arrange marriage. He has published three novels, most notably in 2003 debut The Kite Runner, all of which is at least partially set in Afghanistan and features an Afghan as the protagonist. All of his novels become bestsellers. A thousand splendid suns was a times best seller for 103 weeks, 15 at number one. Hossein’s second novel A Thousand Splendid Suns was published in 2007 and is also set in Afghanistan. The novel follows the story of two women, Mariam and Laila who lives becomes entwined.
