The Awakening novel is written by Kate Chopin and it was first published in 1899. The plot of the novel centers on Edna Pontellier and her struggle between her increasingly unorthodox views on femininity and motherhood with the prevailing social attitudes of the turn of the century American South. It is one of the earliest American novels that focus on women’s issues without condescension. Mixed reviews are received on this book. It prefigures the work of American novelists such as William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway and echoes the works of contemporaries such as Edith Wharton and Henry James. It can also be considered among the first southern works in a tradition that would culminate with the modern masterpieces of Faulkner. The writer of this novel writes this novel in naturalism style. Chopin’s novel bears the hallmarks of Mauspassant’s style: a perspective focus on human behavior and the complexities of social structures. In this novel, there are several occasions in which Kate Chopin uses symbolism. One of the most important themes that is discussed in the book is solitude as the original title of this book was A Solitary Soul. Other themes that are also being seen in this book are gender roles and social constraints. The themes of romance and death in The Awakening aid Chopin’s feminist intent of illuminating the restrictive and oppressive roles of women in Victorian society. The Awakening was very controversial at the time of publication in 1899. Although the novel was never technically banned, it was censored. Chopin’s novel was considered immoral not only for its comparatively frank depictions of female sexual desire but also for its depiction of a protagonist who changed against social norms and established gender roles. Chopin did not write another novel after The Awakening and had difficulty stories after its release. One of the main issues of the 19th-century readers had with this novel was the idea of a woman abandoning her duties as wife and mother. It was as strictly reinforced as the main purpose of women’s lives, a character that rebels against these social norms shocked readers.

Kate Chopin was born on February 8, 1850-August 22, 1904. She was a U.S. author of short stories and novels based in Louisiana. She is now considered by some scholars to have been a forerunner of American 20th-century feminist authors of Southern or Catholic background such as Zelda Fitzgerald. Chopin also wrote two novels At Fault 1890, and The Awakening 1889, which are set in New Orleans and Grand Isle, respectively. The characters in this story are usually residents of Louisiana. Chopin was widely recognized as one of the leading writers of her time. In 1990 Chopin was honored with a star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame in that city in Missouri.
