Pride and Prejudice is a romance novel by Jane Austen. It was first published in 1813. The story of this book charts the emotional development of the protagonist, Elizabeth Bennet, who learns the error of making hasty judgments and comes to appreciate the difference between the superficial and the essential. The comedy of the writing lies in the deception of manners, education and marriage and money in the British Regency. Pride and Prejudice retains the fascination of modern readers, consistently appearing near the top of lists of most loved books among both literary scholars and the general public. It has become one of the most popular novels in English Literature, with over 20 million copies sold, and paved the way for many archetypes that abound in modern literature. The 2005 film, Pride and Prejudice, starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen is the most recent Hollywood adaption of the book. After the success of sense and sensibility, nothing would have seemed more natural than to bring out another novel of the same author again the formula of antithesis and alliteration for the title. A major theme in much of Austen’s work is the importance of environment and upbringing in developing young people’s character and morality. Social standing and wealth are not necessarily advantages in her world, and a further theme common to Austen’s work is ineffectual parents. The opening line of the novel famously announces “It is truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife. This sets marriage as a central subject and really a central problem for the novel generally. The novel was well received, with three favorable reviews in the first months following publication.

Jane Austen was born on 16th December, 1755 and died on 18th July, 1817. She was an English novelist known primarily for her six major novels, which interpret, critique, and comment upon the British landed gentry at the end of the 18th century. Austen’s plots often explore the dependence of women on marriage in the pursuit of favorable social standing and economic security. Her works critique the novels of sensibility of the second half of the 18th century and are part of the transition to 19th century literary realism. Austen has inspired a large number of critical essays and literary anthologies. Her novels have inspired many films, from 1940’s Pride and Prejudice to more recent productions like sense and sensibility and love and friendship.
