Gardens of the Moon are the first ten novels in Canadian author Steven Erikson’s high fantasy series, the Malazan book of the fallen. It was the first book that was published in 1999, and nominated for a world fantasy award. The story of the book was about the use of high magic, and unusual plot structure. The novel opens in the 96th year of the Malazan Empire, during the final year of the rule of Emperor Kellanved. The large part of Gardens of the Moon involved the dismantling of various conventions of the fantasy genre. Reviewers of this novel have noted Erikson’s penchant of avoiding fairy tale distinctions between good and evil. The main themes of this novel are myth creation, and war. The novel was first released by Bantman in UK and Canada as a trade paperback edition. The novel received mixed to positive reviews from critics. The Guardian described Erikson’s world building as astounding and also praised the character development. The characters in this novel feel realistic and their personalities actually change and adapt through the story. It also praised the deep and complex plot of the novel. On the other hand, Publishers weekly criticized the novels characterization and lack of real depth, stating that the fast moving plot with sieges, duels and revenge, unearthed monsters and earth striding gods, but he settles comfortably in George R.R.Martin Country.
About Steven Erikson’s:
Steven Erikson was born on 7th October, 1959. He is the pseudonym of Steve Rune Lundin, a Canadian novelist, who was trained and educated as both an archaeologist and anthropologist. His best known work is the ten volume fantasy series Malazan book of the fallen which by 2012 had sold over 1,000,000 copies worldwide. He says that he enjoys playing with and overturning the conventions of fantasy, presenting characters that violate the stereotypes associated with their roles. Erikson’s first novel of the Malazan book of the fallen series, Garden of the Moon (1999), was well received. It was short listed for a world fantasy award. It has also earned him the reputation as one of the best authors in the fantasy genre, and was described as “An astounding debut”. The novel was acclaimed for its combination of originality and intelligent, strong and exciting storytelling.
