Fifty Shades of Grey is a 2011 erotic romance novel written by British author E.L. James. It is the first installment in the fifty shades trilogy. The story in this novel covers the relationship between a college graduate, Anastasia Steele, and a young business magnate, Christian Grey. This novel is notable for its erotic scenes, sexual practices involving bondage and discipline etc. Publishing rights for publishing this novel were acquired by vintage books in March 2012. Fifty shades of grey have topped best-seller lists around the world, selling over 125 million copies worldwide by June 2015. This novel has been translated into 52 languages and set a record in the United Kingdom as the fastest selling paperback of all time. It has received mixed to negative reviews, with most critics noting poor literary qualities of the work. Fifty Shades of Grey has attracted criticism due to its depictions of BDSM, with some BDSM participants stating that the book confuses BDSM with abuse and presents it as a pathology to be overcome as well as showing incorrect and possibly dangerous BDSM techniques. The storyline of this novel is presented as romance; however, the theme of this book is that bondage, dominance, and sadomasochism are normal and pleasurable. In March 2012, branches of the public library in Brevard country, Florida removed copies of fifty shades of grey from their shelves, with an official stating that it did not meet the selection criteria for the library and that reviews for the book had been poor. A film adaptation for the book was produced by Focus features, Michael De Luca productions and Trigger Street Productions, with Universal pictures and focus features securing the rights to the trilogy in March 2012.

The combined novels had solved over 125 million copies worldwide, over 35 million copies in the United States and set the record in the United Kingdom as the fastest selling paperback of all time. In 2012, Time Magazine named her one of “The world’s 100 most influential people”. The novel that was written by her was also adapted into the films. James says the idea for the Fifty Shades trilogy began as a response to the vampire novel series Twilight. James was one of the British celebrities including Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Rachel Riley to design and sign her own card for the UK children charity. She received Time 100 by Time magazine, “the 100 most influential people in the world”. In 2012 she also received publishing person of the year award. She also received National book award (UK) for fifty shades of Grey.
