About The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton:
The Outsiders is a coming of age novel written by S.E. Hinton. It was first published in 1967 by Viking Press. Hinton was 15 when she started writing the novel but did most of the work when she was 16 and a junior in high school. Hinton was 18 when the book was published. The book follows two rival groups, the Greasers and the Socs, who are divided by their Socio economic status. The story is told in first person narrative by Protagonist Ponyboy Curtis. The story in the book takes place in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1965, but this is never stated in the book. Ponyboy Curtis, a member of a gang called “Greasers” is leaving a movie theatre when groups of Socs, the Greasers rival gang, jump him. The next night, Ponyboy and his Greaser friends Dallas “Dally” Wintson and Johnny meet Socs, Cherry Valance and Marcia, at a drive in movie theatre. The Outsiders was a controversial book at the time of its publication, it is still currently challenged and debated. It was ranked #38 on the American Library Association’s Top 100 most frequently challenged books of 1990-1999. This book has been banned from some schools and libraries because of the portrayal of gang violence, underage smoking, drinking, strong language and family dysfunction. However, in many schools book is part of the curriculum for middle and high schools.
About S.E. Hinton:
Susan Eloise Hinton was born on July 22, 1948. He is an American writer best known for her young adult novels set in Oklahoma, especially The Outsiders, which she wrote during high school. In 1988, she received the inaugural Margaret Edwards Award from the American Library Association for her cumulative contribution in writing for teens. Hinton received the inaugural 1988 Margaret A. Edwards Award from the American YA librarians. The annual award recognizes one author of books published in the U.S and specified works. In 1992 she was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa by the University of Tulsa, and in 1998 she was inducted into the Oklahoma writers Hall of Fame at the Oklahoma Center for poets and writers of Oklahoma State University Tulsa.
