About Sybil:
Sybil or the two nations is an 1845 novel that was written by Benjamin Disraeli. It was published in the same year as Friedrich Engels’s The Condition of the working class in England in 1844; Sybil traces the plight of the working classes of England. The book is a roman a, or a novel with thesis which was meant to create a furor over the squalor that was plaguing England’s working class cities. Disraeli’s novel was adapted into a silent film called “Sybil” that was on air in 1921, starring Evelyn Brent and Cowley Wright. Chartism failed as a parliamentary movement; however five of the six points of Chartism would become a reality within a century of the group’s formation. Chartism demanded Universal suffrage for men, secret ballot, removal of property requirements for parliament, Salaries for members of parliament, Equal Electoral districts, annually elected parliament. The story in this book is discussed about the true story of a woman possessed by sixteen personalities. There is no critical edition of Disraeli’s novels. Most editions of the novel use the text of Longmans collected Edition. The story of Sybil was about a young woman who had been abused by her mother as a child and as a result, had a mental breakdown and created multiple personalities caused a sensation. Sybil was a bestselling book in the 1970s and was adapted as a 1976 television mini-series and a feature length docudrama in 2007. Sybil also profited, but her true identity remained a secret until after all three women were dead. Sybil’s case generated widespread fascination both in general public and the medical community and a group psychiatrists and psychologists successfully lobbied to have multiple personality disorder included in the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual). Sybil’s real name was Shirley Mason, and she was brought up as a seventh day Adventist in rural Minnesota.
