About Middlemarch:
Middlemarch is a study of provincial life is a novel by the English author George Eliot. It was first published in eight editions during 1871-1872. It comprises several distinct stories and a large cast of characters. The book contains significant themes include the status of women, the nature of marriage, idealism, self-interest, religion, hypocrisy, political reform and education. Middlemarch is a work of realism that refers to many historical events includes the 1832 reform act, the beginnings of the railways, the death of King George IV, and the succession of his brother, the Duke of Clarence. Eliot completes the novel in 1871. Middlemarch is centered on the lives of the residents of Middlemarch, a fictitious midlands town from 1829 onwards. The novel is set in the fictional town of Middlemarch, North Loamshire, which is probably based on Coventry in the country of Warwickshire, where she had lived prior to moving to London. Middlemarch is described as being a silk ribbon manufacturing town. The subtitle of the novel is a study of provincial life. Middlemarch has been adapted numerous times for television and theatre. In 1986 it was adapted into a BBC produced TV mini-series of the same name. Middlemarch was also been adapted as a modernized video blog web series called Middlemarch: The Series. The title of this earlier work is put in quotes in order to distinguish it from the eventual novel of the same title. The novel was completed before being published in eight installments. The Examiner, The Spectator and Athenaeum reviewed each of the books, contemporary response to the novel was mixed. R.H. Hutton criticized the work as its melancholic quality.
About George Eliot:
The original name of George Eliot was Mary Anne Evans born on 22 November, 1819 and died on 22 December, 1880. She is the author of seven novels, including Adam Bede (1859), The Mill on the Floss (1860), Middlemarch (1871-72) and Daniel Deronda (1876). Most of her novels are set in Provincial England and known for their realism and psychological insight. She used a male pen name because she said, to ensure that her works would be taken seriously. Female author use their own names but she wants to break the stereotype of women writing only lighthearted romances. Eliot’s Middlemarch has been described by Martin Amis, and Julian Barnes as the greatest novel in the English language.
